The madness begins: Lambeth bans everything in legal high crack-down

Because none of the major parties have the bravery or the sense to oppose this comically illiberal nonsense, it's up to smaller fringe ones like the Pirate party to issue statements criticising it. Here's Mark Chapman of its Lambeth division doing what the major parties should be doing if they retained any basic comprehension or conviction:

Perfume and Paints to be banned across Lambeth!

Tuesday, 28 July, 2015 - 15:45

Under draconian new powers intended to be implemented by Lambeth Council on 17th August, you could be fined up to £1000 for buying or using perfume, paint, incense sticks, or any other 'intoxicating' substance in any public space within Lambeth.

Lambeth Council are seeking to introduce a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) in order to crack down on the growing use of nitrous oxide (a legal high) in the borough and the associated litter and anti-social behaviour.

Snooping Law Found Illegal

Friday, 17 July, 2015 - 12:00

Controversial surveillance legislation that was pushed through Parliament in days has been found to be unlawful by the High Court. It was found that the Data Retention and Investigatory Powers Act 2014 (DRIPA) failed to provide clear and precise rules to protect data and that the access is not authorised by a court and independent body.

Candidates find that faith and politics do mix

Transport, Housing and Equality dominate Vauxhall election hustings held at Oval Farmer’s Market

Democracy in Vauxhall is ACE. And so is the good Vicar of St. Mark’s, Steve Coulson. We witnessed nine candidates all sharing the stage together, like a Vauxhall tribute to We Are the World.

Taking the top spot with the mic was Vicar Steve, rattling through a brisk and breezy outdoors hustings and making sure that every candidate had a fair chance.

The location was significant – this is where the Kennington gallows once stood. It was more about artisan bread on Saturday morning at the Oval. It was an inspired idea to combine the event with the popular Farmer’s Market. A crowd of around 300 folk listened to the politicians making their pitch.

Pirate Party asks residents to crowd-source policies with candidate standing in Vauxhall ward for the General Election

The Pirate Party is taking open democracy to another level by asking residents to help crowd-source policies that will make up the party manifesto for the 2015 General Election. Mark Chapman is standing for the Pirates in the Vauxhall ward.

Chapman told Brixton Buzz:

“We are proud to be the only Party that crowd-sources its manifesto – letting anyone suggest ideas and comment on suggestions that others have made. It brings in an element of grass-roots democracy that is lacking elsewhere and enables everyone to take part.”

The Pirate Party is a relatively new organisation in British politics. Despite the rather silly name, the core beliefs of the party are civil rights, direct democracy and participation in government.

Pirate Party Delivers on Copyright

Monday, 19 January, 2015 - 10:15

EU copyright rules simply aren't suited to cope with the increase of cross-border cultural exchange facilitated by the Internet, an upcoming European Parliament own-initiative report evaluating 2001's copyright directive finds. The draft released today by Julia Reda, MEP for the German Pirate Party, lays out an ambitious reform agenda for the overhaul of EU copyright announced in the Commission's work programme.
