Loz Kaye Rounds off #PPUK13 Conference: "If We don't Speak Out, Who Will?"

Editor's picture

Party Leader Loz Kaye rounded off the successful, fun, and productive conference at Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry. In his speech to members and delegates, described by Jamie Bartlett of Demos, as "Most angry party leader speech I've ever seen", he set out some of the key themes of the past year and priorities for the way ahead.

He pointed out that the venue was an appropriate one for the conference saying:
“Museums and libraries are the original Pirates. Freeing up knowledge. Freeing up culture. Because it allows everyone to take part not just an elite.”

Public Service Europe: Cameron's Speech Short on Substance

The British prime minister seems to want a ragbag shuffling of tasks rather than a radical new vision for Europe that is about true participation and decisions as close to people as possible – writes Pirate Party UK leader.

The build up to David Cameron's statement on Europe, which Twitter has insisted on calling '#TheSpeech' has been like the place the European Union debate has in UK politics overall. A drawn out, tedious process and something that most people would rather avoid – but at the same time something that has been looming with a dreary inevitability.

The Independent: Game of Thrones and 'Piracy'

Loz Kaye comments in the Independent on 'Game of Thrones' being top of the 'pirate' charts. "It is heavy-handed intellectual property regulation and licensing that is holding companies back," Mr Kaye said. "It is ludicrous that fans actually have to form a group called 'Take My Money, HBO!' because the only way they can see Game of Thrones is by pirating."

The Guardian: Pirate Bay's 10th birthday is a milestone for internet freedom

Loz Kaye writes in Comment is Free.

An internet milestone has just been reached: Pirate Bay has passed its 10th anniversary. The iconic/notorious site (pick your adjective)celebrated with a party just outside Stockholm. Who knows, perhaps entertainment bosses were simultaneously weeping into their champagne and plotting new action against their favourite enemy. The filesharing hub is arguably the most famous of all sites providing access to torrent files and magnet links to allow peer-to-peer sharing. If that means nothing to you, it's like being able to swap those tapes you made of Radio 1 chart shows with anyone in the world.

Falkvinge.net : PRISM the British Dimension

Loz Kaye, leader of the UK Pirate Party, gives a view from the UK about the NSA PRISM revelations: The cultural sense among ordinary people in the UK actually goes very counter to taking authoritarian steps into people’s privacy, Kaye writes, and the sense that the US is legally ignoring UK liberties is disturbing. It is up to us to keep pressing these questions to make sure we don’t sleepwalk in to a society where all of us are suspicious until proven innocent, he writes.
