TTIP Leaks: It Ain't Over Yet

Wendy Cockcroft's picture

I am very proud of the part I played in helping to fight off ACTA in 2012. Indeed, I must confess to a certain amount of schadenfreude where the lamentation of our opponents is concerned. That said, CETA and TTIP are still on the radar and although they have been shot several times they are still on their feet. This is mostly due to the efforts of the corporate lobbyists and their allies in the European Parliament and the US Congress, who are determined to push it through no matter what because they believe it will spur growth. The main bones of contention for Pirates are the intellectual property chapters and ISDS.

How ISDS Killed A Domestic Solar Power Project In India

We've been assured over and over and over again that the ISDS provisions we fear in free trade agreements such as TPP, TTIP, and CETA are only to protect foreign investors from having assets unfairly seized and that this is a completely normal aspect of trade relations and there's nothing to worry our pretty little heads about.

CETA: TTIP's Little Brother. Why We Need To Fight It

CETA is the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the EU and Canada. After years of being negotiated in secret, it's in the legal scrubbing phase and is headed for the EU Parliament where it will either be ratified and put into effect, or killed off like ACTA was on July 4th, 2012. That depends on us and how willing we are to overcome campaign fatigue and push back for another Pirate victory. Please note, we'll have to do it again for TTIP.
