Fair Winds to #Piratenpartij #TK2017

Tomorrow The Netherlands will decide if they are ready to embrace the radical reforms Pirates can offer while us in the UK wish we had a system that could give us the same proportional opportunity.

My humble advice to the Dutch is simple. If we in the UK had a proportional system such as yours, we would not waste this opportunity voting for the same old thing, we wouldn’t vote for the familiar face or weigh up who has the best propaganda. For us it would be simple. There is one clear decision if you value free speech above all else, if you want everyone to have the same, equal and open access to knowledge and if you want a government that respects your right to privacy, then you’ll come to the same conclusion that so many around the world are coming to… it is time to #VotePirate.

This is your chance to be a part of something huge. A global movement of Pirate Parties all seeking radical reforms with their local constituents at heart. Politics doesn't need to be complicated and you don't need to feel powerless. In fact, Pirates don’t want to seize power, we want to give it back.

Something I see in every country that sets Pirates apart from other parties, is their candidates will often post to social media about their daily activities, hobbies, time with their families and friends and what affects them and their communities, then in the same breath, they’ll talk about changing the political landscape to make it better for everyone. Too often we see politicians talking down from their ivory towers, with a pre-determined menu of choices, with pre-determined policies, spoken about in their pre-determined and over-practiced scripts.

We want our communities voices to be heard and we offer real people becoming politicians, not politicians pretending to be real people.

Our PPNL counterparts have been campaigning loud and clear on all of these issues and it makes me feel honoured to be a Pirate. Their push for freedom of the press, an anti-TTIP stance, protecting our right to privacy, free speech, access to information both offline and online is of a calibre we can all be proud of.

Finally, I’d just like to add, I'm not in the habit of talking on behalf of an entire party, built of individuals, indeed I've only ever spoken for myself, however, I’m sure I can make the exception here and say, from everyone in the Pirate Party UK, we wish fair winds to Piraten Partij.
