New Members - Bootstrap

Welcome to Pirate Party UK!

If you're reading this, you're probably a new member, or someone who has recently shown interest in the party. Welcome! This page aims to be a one-stop shop to getting you up to speed with the workings of Pirate Party UK, and getting you connected with other members and Pirate activists. It's a work in progress, and if you have any feedback, please post on the community forums (but more on those later!). Please take the time to go through this information; it will help you to hit the ground running, and be a more effective campaigner from the get-go.

Member Profile and Blog

First stop is to fill out some details on your member profile to let us know a little about yourself! You also have a personal blog where you can share your thoughts with the world. Shout about the issues that matter to you! We want all members to have a voice on our site. We keep an eye on posts that are coming through and put the most interesting ones on our front page, or in our curated magazine feed.

Community Forums

The Community Forums are our home turf; this is where you'll find open discussion about Pirate issues, and where we have public forums around things like internal election candidates or process consultations. Make a post to introduce yourself, or see what everyone else is saying and get involved in the discussion.

Discord

Discord is a chat and VOIP system that we use to have meetings. You can install it on Windows, Mac or Linux or launch it from your browser or as an app on your Android or iPhone. Ideally You should have an Internet connected machine with a microphone and speakers but you're welcome to just use the chat as well. Most modern laptops should be able to connect to and use Discord with no additonal hardware, but you will have a much better experience using a dedicated headset.

Discord Meetups

Regular meetups on Discord include:

  • Board of Governors meeting - The Governors meet monthly, typically on the last Wednesday of every month. All are welcome to attend as observers.
    • Minutes are published after every meeting here.
  • NEC meeting - The NEC meet fortnightly to discuss actions completed and actions pending. This usually happens on Thursdays at 8:30pm UK time (check the events calendar). All are welcome to attend as observers.
    • Minutes are published after every meeting here.
  • Local meetups -  Local branch meet on Discord or in person as per their local schedule - check your branch's home page for more info.

Pads

The pads are where Pirates collaborate to create documents, or record notes of our internal processes. These are usually open to all to read or edit, but we would prefer if you are logged in as this helps to build trust. The more involved you are, the more trust will be inherent in your contributions! Some pads may be private or read-only, but we endeavour to minimise this, to make it clear why, and to be transparent as to the content of these pads. They're probably just brainfarts and scrappy notes - or possibly practical pads that scripts rely on, like the list of scheduled tweets. If you see a protected pad: yell and we will try to open it up.

  • NEC / General Pads are used by the NEC to plan work and collaboarate on creating documents like press releases, policies or other things. NEC pads are open to all, and guests can read/write without login. We recommend members always log in when using pads, as it ensures that we can keep track of who is updating what.

Legacy Wiki

We have a great deal of information (howtos, technical docs, etc) in the Legacy wiki, which we are working to port into the current site. If in doubt, try searching there for information you might need.
